A Guide for Parents

As a parent, you want your child to grow, learn, and thrive in every way possible. But sometimes, your child may struggle with everyday experiences such as loud noises, bright lights, certain textures, or even movement. These could be signs of sensory processing challenges, and one effective way to support your child is through Sensory Integration Therapy (SIT).

Sensory Integration Therapy is a type of occupational therapy designed to help children who have difficulty processing and responding to sensory input. This includes the senses we all know touch, sight, sound, smell, and taste as well as two lesser-known senses: balance (vestibular) and body awareness (proprioception). When the brain has trouble interpreting these signals, it can affect your child’s ability to focus, play, socialize, or even stay calm.

Sensory Integration Therapy (SIT) uses play-based activities in a structured setting to gently expose children to sensory input in a safe and controlled way. Under the guidance of a trained occupational therapist, your child may swing, climb, jump into a ball pit, or explore different textures. These activities are designed to help the brain organize sensory information more effectively.

For example, a child who is overly sensitive to touch might engage in fun, tactile play with sand or clay, helping them become more comfortable over time. A child who is constantly on the move may benefit from deep-pressure activities like pushing weighted objects or crawling through tunnels to help calm their nervous system.

Many parents report that Sensory Integration Therapy helps their child:

  • Improve focus and attention
  • Develop better coordination
  • Feel calmer and more regulated
  • Participate more confidently in daily activities

While SIT is not a quick fix, with consistent sessions and support at home, it can make a real difference.

If you notice your child frequently covering their ears, avoiding certain textures, seeking constant movement, or becoming easily overwhelmed, consider talking to an occupational therapist experienced in sensory integration.

You are not alone on this journey. With the right support, your child can build the skills they need to feel more comfortable and confident in their world.
