Global Accessibility Awareness Day

GAAD

Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), observed every year on the third Thursday of May (May 15, 2025), shines a spotlight on the importance of digital access and inclusion for people of all abilities. While accessibility impacts people of all ages, it holds special significance for children with disabilities, who often rely on digital tools for learning, communication, and development.

Why Accessibility Matters for Children with Disabilities?

Children with Disabilities, whether physical, sensory, intellectual, or developmental, may face challenges in traditional learning environments. Technology, when designed with accessibility in mind, can be a powerful equalizer. It can open doors to education, expression, and interaction that may otherwise be difficult or unavailable.

From educational apps and e-books to online classrooms and communication tools, accessible digital resources help children:

  • Learn at their own pace.
  • Engage more actively in classroom activities.
  • Communicate more effectively with teachers and peers.
  • Build confidence and independence.

However, when these tools are not designed inclusively, they can unintentionally exclude the very children they are meant to support.

What Digital Accessibility Looks Like for Children?

Accessible design means creating digital experiences that are usable by all children, including those with:

  • Visual impairments (screen readers, audio descriptions, high-contrast visuals)
  • Hearing impairments (captions, transcripts, visual cues)
  • Cognitive or learning disabilities (simple layouts, clear instructions, audio support)
  • Motor difficulties (keyboard navigation, voice controls, switch-access compatibility)

These features benefit not only children with disabilities but also many others, including younger children, multilingual learners, and those in different learning environments.

Celebrating GAAD with Purpose

On Global Accessibility Awareness Day,let us renew our commitment to a future where all children, regardless of ability have equal opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive. An accessible digital world is not just a technical goal, it is a promise of belonging and dignity for every child.
